Help! Book Rut Woes and How to Find Your Next Read

We’ve all been there – picking up book after book, only to find ourselves unable to get into the story or connect with the characters. It’s a frustrating feeling, especially for book lovers who look forward to getting lost in a good story. But fear not, there are ways to get out of a book rut and rediscover the joy of reading. Here are some tips:

Try a different genre

If you find yourself stuck in a rut with a particular genre, try switching it up. If you usually read mysteries, try a romance or a fantasy novel. Sometimes all it takes is a change of pace to reignite your passion for reading.

Ask for recommendations

Ask your friends, family, or even your local librarian (wink wink) for book recommendations. They may suggest something you wouldn’t have thought to pick up yourself, and it could end up being your new favorite read. I’ve definitely browsed friends kindle libraries before!

Bound to the Battle God by Ruby Dixon is a personal favorite of mine. If you want intrigue, world building, and spice – this is definitely a must read. (18+)

Browse a new bookstore or library

Sometimes the act of browsing in a new environment can be inspiring. Visit a new bookstore or library and take your time perusing the shelves. You may find a new author or series that catches your interest.

Re-read an old favorite

There’s nothing wrong with re-reading a book you already know and love. It can be comforting to revisit a story and characters you’re familiar with, and it might even give you the motivation to try something new next. I almost always come back to Jane Austen when I’m in a rut. I’ll also rewatch the 2004 cinematic masterpiece Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen to really drive the story home.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – it is a truth universally acknowledged that I will read this book at least twice a year.

Take a break

If all else fails, take a break from reading altogether. It’s okay to step away from books for a little while and come back when you’re feeling refreshed. You can use this time to explore other hobbies or activities that interest you, and when you come back to reading, you may find yourself with a renewed sense of enthusiasm.

Remember, don’t feel pressured to finish a book if you’re not enjoying it! There are so many wonderful authors and novels out there but in any case, don’t be afraid to take a break.

Happy Reading (or relaxing! Whatever floats your boat)!
